Case Study: Cross Cultural Awareness
When teams from different cultural backgrounds come together, their communication styles can clash. In my latest video, taken from my Udemy course “Cultural Awareness, Generational Differences, and Diplomacy,”
🌎 Emma, a project manager at TechCorp, addresses these differences between her Indian and European teams.
📽️ Watch the video to learn how understanding cultural differences can bridge communication gaps and enhance team dynamics.

ℹ️ More info: The Indian team comes from a collectivist culture, where group harmony and consensus are vital. For instance, they may prefer to discuss decisions privately within smaller groups before openly sharing them in meetings, to ensure everyone is in agreement. This approach values careful consideration and a slower, more inclusive decision-making process.
On the other hand, the European team (specifically from Germany, which has a more direct and individualistic culture) values straightforwardness and clear decision-making. For example, they may feel comfortable speaking up immediately in meetings, giving their opinions directly, and expecting quick, clear-cut decisions. This reflects their preference for efficiency and transparency in communication.
These differing styles can lead to misunderstandings, where the Indian team might feel pressured by the European team’s directness, and the European team might feel frustrated by the Indian team’s reserved approach. But by acknowledging these differences, both teams can learn to adapt and improve their collaboration.
